The launch of Tez comes nine months after the company chief executive officer Sundar Pichai told NDTV in a televised interview that he was looking at UPI and ways to adopt it.

What is Tez app?

Tez (Fast in Hindi) is a standalone payment application available for both Android and iOS, Tez will allow you to pay for good and services both online and offline.

“Send money home to your family, split a dinner bill with friends, or pay the neighborhood chaiwala. Make all payments big or small, directly from your bank account with Tez, Google’s new digital payment app for India,” Google notes in its information portal about the new app.

Although there are many UPI-based apps available in India right now. But, Google is offering several new features in its app including proximity transactions.

Features of Tez app

  • It supports various local languages including Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu.
  • App asks users to enter their bank account number and verify their ownership. This is very easy process, just send a text message from your registered mobile number through the Tez app’s interface. Once verified, the app prompts the user to add a UPI PIN, and then they can start making the payments.
  • A user can see all his/her friends who are also using Tez.
  • Google Tez Cash mode option is the one every one of us gonna like, it transmits audio to identify the person nearby to you, and only lets you pay or receive when you’re able to find that user.

The company has partnered with HDFC Bank, ICICI, and State Bank of India for backend processing.

To be clear…

Tez is not a mobile wallet like Paytm where money is stored in the app. Tez is a place that links up your phone with your bank accounts to let you use your phone as a way to deduct money from those linked accounts.
